The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has disclosed how it recently rescued 19 girls who were impregnated by a man in an estate in the nation’s capital city.

Director General of the agency, Hajia Binta Adamu Bello, who disclosed this at a strategic meeting with the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in Abuja on Friday, said the rescue of the pregnant girls was typical of the growing menace and challenge of human trafficking in the country.

According to Bello; “We rescued 19 girls last week, all pregnant for one man in an estate in Abuja; received nine (9) girls from Cote D’Ivoire, and other sordid stories to mention here”.

The NAPTIP boss commended NiDCOM for its support, especially in the recent rescue of 231 young Nigerians from Ghana.

Bello noted that tackling human trafficking required joint action from government, society, and key stakeholders, thus stressed the need for more awareness across all levels to highlight the dangers of trafficking,

While giving recognition to the active role of NiDCOM in engaging with Nigerians in the diaspora, Bello expressed the commitment of NAPTIP in strengthening its relationship with NiDCOM.

She assured that NAPTIP will continue to protect the rights and dignity of Nigerians against trafficking in persons.

In her own remarks, the Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Dabiri-Erewa, called for a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approaches against human trafficking in Nigeria, adding that while some appreciable progress has been made, more needs to be done.

The NiDCOM boss particularly said that traffickers should be named and shamed while enforcing stricter penalties as a deterrent to other criminal actors.

According to Dabiri-Erewa; “NAPTIP cannot work alone. There is therefore the need for closer collaboration with NiDCOM, the National Commission for Refugees Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), and other sister agencies, to curb the menace”.

She also pushed for more flexible policies and better funding to help NAPTIP to fully carry out its mandate against the menace.

Dabiri-Erewa thanked the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), neighbouring governments, Nigerian Diaspora Communities, Wema bank and NGOs for helping to rescue and reintegrate trafficked victims and also commended the NAPTIP DG for her dedication.

She said; “We will continue to do our best to save these young ones and encourage safe and regular pathways for migration”.
