According to a statement released by Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, the public holiday was announced by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, acting on the authority of President Tinubu.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the Minister stated.
He further urged Nigerians to use the day to honour the former President’s memory by promoting peace, patriotism, and national cohesion, which reflect the core values Buhari consistently championed during his time in office.
As part of the national mourning protocol, flags across the country are to fly at half-mast from Sunday, July 13 through Saturday, July 19, 2025.
The Federal Government also extended its deepest condolences to the family of the late President, the government and people of Katsina State, and the entire nation, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
Meanwhile, Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, has confirmed details of the late president’s funeral arrangements. Speaking during a press briefing on Monday, the governor revealed that, after consultations with the family and close associates in London, it was agreed that Buhari’s remains would arrive in Katsina by noon on Tuesday, July 15, and he would be buried in Daura, his hometown, at 2:00 PM the same day.
