Residents Celebrate Arrest of Nigerian Businessman Benedict Peters in Kanda
The arrest of Nigerian businessman Benedict Peters in Kanda has sparked celebrations among residents of Aurora Apartments, who have expressed relief over the resolution of alleged disturbances linked to his activities. Long-standing complaints about noise, congestion, and blocked access to the apartment complex reportedly prompted calls for intervention by authorities. The operation, involving multiple security agencies, has drawn mixed reactions, with some questioning aspects of the arrest while others welcome the move as a step toward restoring peace in the community.

The recent detention of Nigerian businessman Benedict Peters has sparked widespread attention and elicited strong reactions from residents of Aurora Apartments in Kanda, close to Jubilee House.
Residents have expressed relief over what they described as unresolved issues involving Mr. Peters, who has resided in the area for several years. Some neighbors accused him of causing disturbances in the community, prompting calls for authorities to take action.
One resident, Mr. Jacob Asamoah, stated that multiple complaints had been lodged with law enforcement regarding noise and congestion caused by activities linked to Mr. Peters. He welcomed the authorities’ recent intervention, saying, “We hope this step will restore peace to our neighborhood.”
Mr. Asamoah further alleged that vehicles were frequently used to block access to the apartment complex, inconveniencing other residents. These grievances reportedly played a role in prompting security agencies to act.
Reports indicate that Mr. Peters was taken into custody following a coordinated operation involving National Security, the Police, and other agencies. The arrest allegedly followed an incident at his residence, though the exact circumstances remain unclear. Videos circulating online appear to depict a tense confrontation during the arrest, but comprehensive details of the event have yet to be officially verified.
Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Mustapha Gbande, who was reportedly present during the operation, voiced concerns about certain vehicles and motorcycles found on the premises. He questioned whether such equipment should be privately owned.
Mr. Peters, the owner of Nigeria’s Aiteo Group of Companies, has previously been embroiled in legal and political controversies in his home country. His name surfaced in court proceedings initiated by a civil society group urging the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate allegations of financial misconduct. However, no formal charges or convictions have been publicly confirmed by Nigerian authorities.

In Ghana, Mr. Peters’ name also came up during public debates surrounding the COVID-19 testing contract at Kotoka International Airport. At the time, North Tongu Member of Parliament Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa raised questions about the transparency of the agreement between the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) and Frontier Healthcare Services. According to Mr. Ablakwa, while GACL earned $10 per test, Frontier reportedly amassed substantial profits during the contract period.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement detailing the circumstances of Mr. Peters’ arrest or any potential charges against him.
