Cristiano Ronaldo attended an evening event at the White House on Tuesday, joining U.S. President Donald Trump, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, FIFA president Gianni Infantino, and a large group of global business and sports figures.

While opening the dinner, Trump noted that he had already spoken with Ronaldo and introduced him to his son, Barron, who previously played soccer. Trump told the audience that Barron was excited to meet the Portuguese superstar and joked that the introduction boosted his son’s opinion of him. Trump thanked Ronaldo for attending and mentioned him before many of the other high-profile guests.

Ronaldo’s exact purpose for traveling to Washington was not fully explained, but the visit aligned with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s meetings at the White House. The dinner capped a full day of diplomatic activities and ceremonies. This was the crown prince’s first trip to the United States since the killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.

Ronaldo, one of the most famous footballers in the world and possibly the great of all time marketable super star footballer of all time, has increasingly close ties to Saudi Arabia. He is the leading figure of the Saudi Pro League, which has invested significant state funds in attracting top international players. He currently plays for Al Nassr, a club owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

His record-breaking contracts signed in 2023 and again in 2025 strengthened his role as a public representative for Saudi Arabia. In a recent interview with Piers Morgan, Ronaldo referred to the crown prince as “our boss,” underscoring his alignment with Saudi leadership.

The trip also drew attention because it marked Ronaldo’s first known visit to the United States since 2017, when Der Spiegel reported allegations from Kathryn Mayorga, a Las Vegas woman who accused him of sexual assault. Ronaldo and his team have consistently denied the accusation. Although he participated in preseason tours in the United States earlier in his career, he had not returned after the allegations resurfaced and later moved into U.S. courts in 2018.

Ronaldo’s return comes ahead of Portugal’s scheduled match against the United States in Atlanta in March 2026. He is expected to captain Portugal at the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted across Mexico, Canada, and the United States.

There is still uncertainty around his disciplinary status for the tournament. His recent red card for elbowing an opponent in a qualifier against the Republic of Ireland resulted in a one-match suspension. FIFA rules mandate longer bans for violent conduct. If FIFA’s disciplinary committee determines that the offense meets that standard, he could miss additional World Cup group matches. FIFA representatives have not addressed questions about the timeline or details of the review.

At 40, Ronaldo is nearing the end of his playing career and has taken on more diplomatic roles. He has expressed interest in speaking with Trump about international peace efforts. Earlier this year at the G7 summit in Canada, European Council president Antonio Costa gave Trump a Portugal jersey signed by Ronaldo that included a message: “To President Donald J. Trump, Playing for Peace.”

In his interview with Morgan, Ronaldo said he hoped to meet Trump in person to discuss global issues and praised Trump as someone capable of influencing major decisions.

It is not known how much time the two spent together during Tuesday’s event. Ronaldo sat at a central table beside a Saudi representative. Infantino also attended the dinner but sat at a different table than Ronaldo. With the World Cup coming to North America in 2026, Infantino has maintained regular contact with Trump.

Elon Musk, Tim Cook, and several top executives from the technology, finance, and energy industries were among the additional guests present.
