A citation to Dr. Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe, honoring his fearless leadership, unwavering resilience, and transformative impact in banking and business. His legacy continues to inspire generations

Dr. Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe was a distinguished banker, visionary leader, and an architect of modern banking in Nigeria. His journey from a young, ambitious professional to one of the most influential figures in Africa’s financial sector is a testament to his resilience, strategic brilliance, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
Born with a drive for transformation, Herbert Wigwe played a pivotal role in the repositioning and expansion of Access Bank Plc, working alongside his trusted business partner, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede. Their leadership not only propelled Access Bank to prominence but also reshaped Nigeria’s financial landscape. Wigwe’s dedication to corporate governance, financial inclusion, and economic development cemented his reputation as a forward-thinking leader.
Pioneering Leadership in Banking
Dr. Wigwe began his career in banking with Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), where he honed his expertise in corporate banking, risk management, and financial strategy. In 2002, he joined forces with Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede to acquire a struggling Access Bank, setting the stage for one of the most remarkable turnarounds in the industry.
Through strategic initiatives, capital raising, and an aggressive expansion plan, Herbert Wigwe was very instrumental in transforming Access Bank from a mid-tier bank into one of Nigeria’s largest financial institutions. His commitment to innovation, digital banking, and financial inclusion positioned the bank as a leader in Africa’s banking sector.
Milestones and Contributions
- Bank Consolidation Era (2004): During Nigeria’s banking consolidation period, Wigwe played a significant role in strengthening Access Bank’s capital base. His leadership in share sales and stakeholder engagement was crucial to the bank’s financial stability.
A Moment in Time – The 2004 Banking Consolidation
One afternoon, after wrapping up a session, I was heading out of our office at Oyin Jolayemi in Victoria Island when Herbert came down from his office and bumped into me. He looked at me, as he always did—his sharp eyes filled with curiosity and expectation—and asked, "Have you met your shares target?" I smiled, slightly nervous, and said, "I’m almost at 100%."
Before I could say more, the Acting Group CEO of Access Corporation Plc, Ms Bolaji Agbede, who was then the Group Head of Consumer Banking Group, overheard our conversation. Without hesitation, she turned to Herbert and said, "Ohio will meet his target. And if he does’t, I will support him to achieve it."
That was the kind of leadership and camaraderie Herbert inspired within the pioneering Access Warriors. We weren’t just colleagues—we were a family, bound by a shared goal, pushing each other to succeed. Herbert’s drive was relentless, but it was never selfish. He wanted everyone around him to win.
- CEO Transition (2014): In 2014, Wigwe succeeded Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede as CEO of Access Bank, further expanding its influence across Africa.
- Merger with Diamond Bank (2018): Under his leadership, Access Bank executed a landmark merger with Diamond Bank, making Access Bank Plc as the largest bank in Africa by customer base. This merger significantly boosted its retail banking footprint, increasing its customer base to over 60 million.
- Educational Philanthropy: Herbert Wigwe was a staunch advocate for education and leadership development, leading to the establishment of Wigwe University, an institution focused on nurturing future African leaders.
- Commitment to Integrity and Excellence
Herbert Wigwe’s leadership was characterized by tenacity, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to integrity. He built a culture of accountability, mentorship, and service that inspired those around him. His ability to balance professional rigor with personal relationships made him a leader who was respected not just for his achievements, but for his character.
Legacy and Impact
Dr. Herbert Wigwe’s contributions extend beyond banking. He was a champion of economic growth, a believer in Africa’s potential, and a mentor to countless professionals. His impact will forever be felt in the financial sector, in education, and in the communities he uplifted.
Though his passing leaves a void, his legacy of excellence, vision, and transformative leadership will continue to inspire future generations.
Honoring His Memory
Losing Herbert is a wound that time may never fully heal to many of us. The thought that we will never again hear his booming laughter in the office hallways, feel the intensity of his presence in meetings, or exchange those knowing glances in moments of triumph—it is heartbreaking. But as much as we grieve, we must also celebrate. We celebrate a life well-lived, a man who defied the odds, changed the game, and left an indelible mark on the world.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to banking, economic development, and leadership in Nigeria and beyond, Dr. Herbert Wigwe is celebrated as a pioneer, a mentor, and a force of positive change. His legacy will continue through the institutions he built and the lives he impacted.
