Nigeria attracts $1.3bn Chinese lithium investment amid push for clean energy value chains
In a major boost to Africa’s green industrial transition, Chinese firms have invested over $1.3 billion in Nigeria’s rapidly expanding lithium processing industry, according to the country’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake.
China-Nigeria Partnership Deepens as $1.3 Billion Flows into Lithium Processing Industry
Since September 2023, Chinese investors have poured over $1.3 billion into Nigeria’s growing lithium value chain, marking a major leap in Africa’s green mineral transformation. Leading the charge are Canmax Technology, Jiuling Lithium, Avatar New Energy, and other key players that are strengthening Nigeria’s clean energy prospects and industrial capacity.
At the 2025 China Mining Conference in Tianjin, themed “Connect and Collaborate, Co-Build and Co-Share,”Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, commended the partnership between both nations. He noted that these investments are driving economic diversification, reducing oil dependency, and equipping Nigerian engineers with critical technological skills.
According to Alake, joint ventures between Nigerian and Chinese firms are “creating quality technical jobs and expanding local industrial competence.” He added that the government has introduced wide-ranging reforms, including the deployment of Mining Marshals, satellite surveillance systems, and digital mining platforms such as the Electronic Mining Cadastre (eMC+) and Nigerian Mineral Resources Decision System (NMRDS) to improve transparency and combat illegal mining.

As Chairman of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG), Alake emphasized that Africa must harmonize standards and share knowledge to harness its mineral wealth sustainably. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s long-term vision of building a globally competitive mineral value chain that fuels clean energy, industrial growth, and responsible mining.
With over $1.3 billion already committed to lithium processing, Nigeria is positioning itself as one of Africa’s fastest-growing hubs for green mineral investment, heralding a new era of regional industrialization and shared prosperity.
