Chasing Success: Striking the Right Balance Between Ambition and Patience in Today’s Youth
success is built not wished

        In today’s fast-paced world, the desire for instant success has become a defining trait of youth culture. From viral TikTok stars to overnight entrepreneurs, teenagers and young adults are increasingly drawn to the allure of quick fame and fortune. Social media platforms amplify this mindset, showcasing highlight reels of success while glossing over the years of hard work behind them. Yet, as Maya Angelou wisely said, “All great achievements require time.” This timeless truth stands in stark contrast to the “get-rich-quick” mentality that dominates the aspirations of many young people today. But why is patience so important, and what can we learn from those who have embraced the journey rather than rushing the destination?

The Allure of Quick Success
For many youths, success is often defined by instant gratification. A teenager might dream of becoming a famous YouTuber, amassing millions of followers overnight, or launching a startup that skyrockets to a billion-dollar valuation. The appeal is undeniable: why spend years grinding when you can achieve fame and fortune in a fraction of the time?

Take the example of Lil Tay, a young social media personality who gained viral fame at the age of 9. Her provocative videos and over-the-top persona quickly made her a householdname. Yet, her rise to fame was short-lived. Without a solid foundation or long-term plan, her career fizzled out almost as quickly as it began. This is a common pitfall of the quick-success mindset: without patience and preparation, even the most dazzling achievements can crumble.
Maya Angelou’s words remind us that true success is not a sprint but a marathon.

The Role of Failure
One of the most significant differences between those who chase quick success and those who follow due process is their attitude toward failure. For many youths, failure is seen as a dead end. A teenager might abandon a passion project after the first setback, believing they’re not cut out for success. But failure is not the opposite of success; it’s a stepping stone.

Take the example of Michael Jordan, widely regarded as the greatest basketball player of all time. In his early years, Jordan was cut from his highschool basketball team. Instead of giving up, he used that failure as motivation to work harder. He famously said, “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” This mindset—embracing failure as part of the journey—is what separates lasting success from fleeting fame.

   As a teenager who has overly welcomed instant gratification for the longest, here are tips that have helped me scale through in this journey of mine.

 Set Realistic Goals: Break big dreams into smaller, achievable steps. Celebrate progress, not just the end result.This is very important, i never took goal setting seriously until recently with the aid of a program that takes place in my church every sunday {SLE- school of leadership and excellence}

Learn Patience: Practice delayed gratification by setting aside time for skill-building or education.

Seek Mentorship: Find role models who have achieved success through hard work and learn from their journeys

Limit Social Media Consumption: Reduce exposure to unrealistic success stories that fuel impatience. this was the hardest for me, but like they say wha you see or watch makes up who you are in the long run, learn to control what you watch so wrong emotions or attitude to reaching your success will not be developed.

Focus on the Process: Enjoy the journey of growth and self-discovery, rather than obsessing over the destination. cause its the process  you are going to talk, laugh,and leverage on when you reach your destination.

   In conclusion, Maya Angelou’s quote, “All great achievements require time,” serves as a powerful reminder that true success cannot be rushed. While the allure of quick success is tempting, it often leads to disappointment and burnout. On the other hand, those who embrace the journey—learning from failures, building a strong foundation, and celebrating small wins—are more likely to achieve lasting success.For youths and teenagers, the key is to shift their focus from the destination to the process. Success is not about how quickly you can achieve your goals but about how well you can grow, learn, and persevere along the way. As the saying goes, Rome wasn’t built in a day,” and neither is a fulfilling and successful life.

     So, the next time you feel the pressure to achieve success overnight, remember Maya Angelou’s words. Ask yourself: Am I willing to put in the time and effort to achieve something truly great? Success is not a race; it’s a journey. And like all great journeys, it’s the steps you take along the way that make it worthwhile.
