Professor Marwan Al-Akaidi, Vice Chancellor of Wigwe University in Rivers State, recently urged new students to cultivate focus and a strong foundation that aligns with the university’s mission of advancing Africa’s potential through academic excellence and integrity. Addressing the inaugural matriculation ceremony held on Thursday November 14, 2024 at the Isiokpo campus, Professor Al-Akaidi welcomed the pioneering class of 120 students, representing diverse fields including Arts, Engineering, Management, Social Sciences, Science, and Computing.
In his address, Professor Al-Akaidi emphasized the importance of setting a foundation that will impact future generations, encouraging students to strive toward this legacy. Reflecting on the university's establishment, he paid tribute to the institution's founder, the late Dr. Herbert Wigwe, with a moment of silence, highlighting his vision of creating a hub for fearless academic pursuit and outstanding achievement.

“The mission for Wigwe University extends beyond personal success,” the Vice Chancellor noted. “We are building an environment that nurtures not only academic knowledge but also moral courage, critical thinking, and leadership with empathy and integrity.” He encouraged students to embrace their educational journey as a path to becoming leaders committed to societal transformation.
Mr. Julius Okojie, the Pro-Chancellor and Governing Council Chairman, also celebrated the significance of the day. He emphasized that this moment marks a new era in education, offering congratulations to the matriculants and urging the local community to support and guide them. Recalling Dr. Wigwe’s dream, he stated, “The late Herbert Wigwe would be proud to see Wigwe University established as a premier institution of learning.”
Delivering a keynote speech, Emir of Kano State, Mohammed Sanusi, inspired students to embrace resilience and ethical ambition, advising them to take pride in “living on the right side of history” and becoming catalysts for Africa’s future. “My young students,” he said, “remember that success lies in refusing to yield to fear.”
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, represented by Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ovy Chinedu Chukwuma, encouraged students to uphold high standards, work hard, and positively impact their communities, assuring them of the state's support throughout their academic pursuits.
Tochi Wigwe, daughter of the late founder, also extended a heartfelt message, lauding the matriculants for their courage and encouraging them to fully embrace the opportunities before them. Pa Shyngle Wigwe, father of the founder, bestowed blessings on the students, the institution, and their families, expressing hopes for the university’s growth and success in the coming years.
The ceremony concluded with a captivating drama performance by the Theatre Arts Department titled “Dreams Come True,” depicting the inspiring story of a scholarship student who, despite financial challenges, thrived at Wigwe University, underscoring the institution’s commitment to student welfare.
