FG Raises Alarm Over COVID-19 Variant XEC Detected in 29 Countries

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, has issued a directive urging healthcare authorities nationwide to heighten surveillance and readiness in response to the emergence of the XEC COVID-19 variant, which is spreading rapidly across multiple countries.

The XEC variant, which represents another evolutionary step in the virus’s development, was first detected in Australia and has now been confirmed in 29 countries. This directive was outlined in a letter dated December 5, made public on Saturday, and addressed to the Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors by Dr. O.N. Anuma, Permanent Secretary and Head of the Teaching Hospital Division of the Ministry.

The letter stated, “The Ministry is alerting health institutions to the newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant, which has been identified in Australia and has since spread to 29 countries worldwide. This variant is of concern due to its demonstrated growth advantage over other circulating strains, posing potential risks to public health.”

Call for Vigilance
Dr. Anuma emphasized the importance of immediate preparedness within hospitals and healthcare systems, urging stakeholders to activate robust alert systems for the early detection and management of COVID-19 cases.

“All healthcare facilities must heighten their index of suspicion for patients presenting with COVID-like symptoms and ensure that alert mechanisms are activated without delay,” he noted.

He also called for proactive collaboration and real-time information-sharing among healthcare institutions, stressing the importance of coordinated efforts in mitigating the potential impact of the new variant.

Enhanced Monitoring Protocols
The directive further instructed medical professionals to adopt enhanced monitoring strategies and ensure the rapid dissemination of critical data about the XEC strain.

“We urge your committees to work closely with stakeholders to collect and share essential data on the XEC variant. Such collaboration, including timely updates to the Ministry of Health, is critical for developing effective response strategies,” Dr. Anuma warned.

Global Spread and Concerns
Reports from PUNCH Healthwise indicate that the XEC variant, first identified in Germany in June, has since been detected in countries including the United Kingdom, United States, Denmark, and France. Over 600 cases have been documented globally as of September.

While scientists acknowledge that XEC possesses mutations that may facilitate its spread, vaccines are expected to continue offering significant protection against severe illness.

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the nation's preparedness, urging citizens to remain vigilant and adhere to preventive measures as healthcare systems bolster their defenses against the evolving pandemic.
