EFCC Clarifies Position on Edo Election Witnesses Unrelated to Corruption Investigations
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that it has no involvement with any Edo State election witness not facing corruption charges, reaffirming its commitment to lawful investigations and due process
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has responded to a trending video suggesting that Mr. Jonathan Okunbor, a suspect under investigation for an alleged N6 billion fraud, is a witness in the Edo election tribunal.
The EFCC categorically refutes this claim, stating that Mr. Okunbor is not a witness for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the tribunal, contrary to assertions made by Mr. Asue Ighodalo. Instead, Okunbor is a primary suspect in a case of misappropriation of funds across all 18 local government areas of Edo State.
Investigations reveal that approximately N6 billion was diverted to Kezmith Global Ventures, a company operated by Okunbor under the false identity of Mr. Godfrey Emode. EFCC investigators, following the trail of fraudulent activities, apprehended Emode, who subsequently led them to Okunbor at Eterno Hotel during a pre-trial meeting.

During the operation, Mr. Ighodalo and others at the hotel obstructed EFCC officials from executing their constitutional duties, insisting that Okunbor was a tribunal witness to shield him from arrest. However, Ighodalo’s own counsel clarified to EFCC investigators that Okunbor held no status as a witness in the election tribunal.
The EFCC emphasizes its unwavering commitment to the rule of law and reaffirms that it has no interest in any election witness unconnected to corruption cases. Nonetheless, it will pursue and prosecute any individual implicated in corruption, regardless of their affiliations.
The public is assured that Mr. Jonathan Okunbor will be brought to justice soon for the alleged N6 billion fraud linked to his company, Kezmith Global Ventures.
